What is Ground Rappelling - There are two basic types of rappel, ground and aerial. Ground rappelling takes place from a grounded platform, top of a building, off the side of a mountain, cliff, rocks, etc. Aerial rappelling takes place from an aircraft platform such as a helicopter. Neither of these types should be confused with the type of rappelling done by climbers. In tactical rappelling the descend is much faster with the primary goal of going from point A down to point B with or without tactical weapon type gear. There is less emphasis on getting up and more on getting down, which is pretty much the opposite approach of climbers.
